What makes a QR code "trackable"?
A standard QR code encodes a URL directly. When someone scans it, their device opens that URL and nothing is logged. A trackable QR code works differently: it encodes a redirect URL that routes through a tracking server before delivering the visitor to your destination.
The tracking server logs the scan event — timestamp, country, device type — in milliseconds, then forwards the user. From the visitor's perspective the experience is instant. From your perspective, you get a full scan log.
What data can you track?
Every scan on a QR Attribution trackable link logs the following:
- Total scans — cumulative scan count
- Unique scans — distinct devices, de-duplicated by fingerprint
- Country — top scan origins by country
- Device type — mobile vs. desktop breakdown
- Scan-by-day trend — time series chart of daily scans
- UTM parameters — passed through to GA4 or Plausible if added to the destination
All of this is visible in your free QR Attribution analytics dashboard, updated in real time as scans come in.

Create Trackable QR Learn moreBonus: add UTM parameters for campaign attribution
If you use Google Analytics 4 or Plausible, you can layer UTM campaign attribution on top of QR scan data. Add UTM parameters to your destination URL before you generate the QR code:
https://example.com/landing?utm_source=flyer&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=spring2026
When someone scans, your analytics tool receives the UTM data alongside the QR Attribution scan count. Use the UTM link builder to construct these URLs without typos.
utm_medium=qr
consistently across all QR campaigns. This lets you segment all QR traffic in one GA4
filter regardless of source or campaign.
How to view your scan analytics
After your QR code is live and collecting scans, view your data at the QR Attribution analytics dashboard. Each trackable link has its own stats page showing:
- Total and unique scan counts with trend sparkline
- Scan-by-day bar chart (last 30 days)
- Top countries by scan count
- Device type split (mobile / desktop)
Data is updated in real time — scans logged in under a second. No waiting for daily batch imports.
Want to monitor multiple QR campaigns at once? The dashboard lists all your trackable links in one view so you can compare performance across campaigns without switching tabs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I track QR code scans for free?
Yes. QR Attribution's trackable QR codes and analytics are completely free. Sign in with Google or email — no paid plan required.
What data does a trackable QR code collect?
Each scan logs total scan count, unique scan count, country, device type, and a scan-by-day trend. With UTM parameters on the destination, campaign data flows through to GA4 or Plausible too.
Does the QR code image change when I update the destination URL?
No. Trackable QR codes use a redirect URL. You can update the destination in your dashboard any time — the printed QR image never changes.
How long does scan data take to appear?
Scan events are logged in real time. Data appears in your analytics dashboard within seconds of a scan, with no batch delays.
Can I track scans from printed materials?
Yes — printed QR codes work the same as digital ones. Every scan (from a poster, business card, packaging, etc.) is logged with the same real-time attribution data.
